My Favorite Things: Hawkman vol.3 #27 cover

This is a cover for issue 27 of third volume of Hawkman comic. It contains everything you need to know about the character. Which - there are multiple versions of the character and it is extremely complicated. It should be noted that i was looking for the cover of #27 for a longer period of time than i was writing this post.

Hawkman is one of the most confusing characters ever. He is confusing beyond superhero comics. He is confusing on a Finnegans Wake level of confusion. You just can't get through. That level of confusion was achieved without ever trying. Simply by not caring enough, not thinking through and throwing everything either against the wall or simply away. Hawkman is so inconsistent any time he gets consistent it seems suspicious - he's not the guy for that.

Inconsistency and constant metamorphosis are a kind of trademarks of a character by this point. Just thinking about all the stuff that happened with Hawkman through various revisions and retcons are pure bliss. It makes him a complex meta-character in a vein of Morrison's Animal Man.

Unfortunately - it is also miles better than anything that happened to him in the comics. He is  one of the oldest superheroes still in the mix and never really managed to get it together and truly shine even for a short while. even though he was underserved seemingly for eternity. But who cares? He's been through some seriously messed up stuff. And even retcon punch couldn't fix it. He's just rolling to destination unknown. Which is fine by me - i like some jumbled steaming mess warped backwards.

So naturally - i enjoyed that certain aspect of the character but never really cared about him. Because - why should i? But then it hit me. It was that moment - when everything becomes clear. Except it wasn't and it wasn't even making any sense. But it was and i thought it was kinda fun.

Hawkman would be nice DC Judge Dredd kind of character.

Let me share my idea for the characters with you. Not because it is good in any way (it is not, honestly), but because it consistent with characters tendency to morph into whatever.

Since one of the Hawkman is kinda like space cop - let's make him DC version of Judge Dredd. Unrelated but important - he will also be Charlie Parker AKA god of be bop because why not? If Hawkman is associated with clusterfuck - we need to go all the way to the clusterfuck supreme. So - Hawkman will be like Judge Dredd - tough no-bullshit guy who just brings it. And he will be so tough that his nemesis will be himself in the same time. But not because he is mad but because there are two Judge Dredd Hawkman. One of them is from out of nowhere. But i'm getting too far.

In order to make Hawkman a DC version of Judge Dredd - you don't need to do much. Just put him into futurist Thanagar metropolis, cut him off the bigger DC universe (no one cares about Hawkman so it will be easy) and do some Judge Dredd stuff. It is that easy.
